Today, on the Sacred Travel trip to Arizona, we had the amazing opportunity to meet with a Hopi leader and healer. He shared a number of amazing bits of knowledge with us from his life, and allowed us to ask many questions. I found it very sad that such a gifted, intelligent, and learned man would not have a legacy. He was no longer part of the Hopi reservation and lived alone. From what he shared, many of the younger generation are no longer interested in the Hopi traditions and are more concerned about making money or going through the motions on rituals. He had an interesting perspective as he talked about it not being the fault of the younger ones but of his generation for not teaching and training.

It got me thinking about my responsibility to pass on the gifts that I have received – not only my God-given gifts, but also the gifts I have learned from others. I have been blessed with amazing mentors in my life, especially Drs. Bob and Judith Wright. I have changed my life significantly using the skills and practices I have learned and received at Wright. It is my responsibility to mentor others, and to help train the next set of leaders as I was trained. I would be stingy and small and competitive to not. What a tragedy it would be if all I have learned about leading and maximizing my potential and living life as an adventure were not passed on to others…

Today, we met with a remarkable man named Albert Gaulden, author, spiritual teacher and wonderful speaker. He talked a lot about really knowing yourself and being your true self. I found him very compelling because I am working on being more real, more genuine, more mutual. He posed several very provocative questions. One that really hit me was “are you living as if God exists?” To me, this means have I set the right priorities in my life; am I pursuing my mission fully; am I using the resources and skills and talents I am blessed with to the fullest; do I have enough sense of urgency? This is a very simple question I can ask myself every day to re-orient myself to what is most important.

During our Sacred Travel to AZ, we visited ArcoSanti, a community based on architecture and ecology. Paolo Soleri, the founder, had a vision to house 5000 individuals in 15 acres rather than the 500 acres it would take in today’s model. He wanted to create sustainable living that also produced greater connection and ability to share resources. It has been over 40 years and about 5% of his vision has been completed.

While there, I had a feeling of sadness. It was a beautiful vision that didn’t have a completion. Yes, they learned from some mistakes. They discovered individuals couldn’t just come there to hang out but that they needed to work and contribute to the whole and that was an important lesson. But they didn’t evolve their vision as the world evolved.

There was so much potential- so much opportunity for life, beauty and living by principles. In my mind, they were lacking in leadership and governance. They were missing execution of a vision with urgency.

I am in the question of how do I contribute to keep my company’s mission vibrant and sustaining and growing. I know I have a responsibility to help others sort through that same question and create answers and direction. I need to keep my own transformation alive and growing. That is my goal, my journey this pilgrimage.

I had the amazing opportunity to spend my birthday on a pilgrimage to Arizona for the Wright Sacred Travel trip, and all I can say is that it has been a wonderful day. Every aspect of the day was special in its own way.

We started the day by attending an interfaith church service. One of the questions that the service raised was the concept of our “life function.” From church, we drove out into the high desert, where we hiked in Walnut Creek Canyon and the Petrified Forest National Park. As I kept on thinking about life function and purpose, the beauty of the scenery created many “pinch me” moments.

Tonight, we drove to our hotel as the most amazing sunset faded behind the hills. Surrounded by the vast deserts and the amazing red rock mountains of Arizona, I am coming to my own definition of my life’s purpose. I believe that the “more Margaret” I am—that is, the more I show up as my most authentic self, owning the natural talents and gifts I was born with—the more I’m living “on purpose.” And that is a lovely gift to give myself. Today, all the pilgrims traveling with me offered me visions for the person they see me becoming. I felt love and an openness to learning what’s next for me. I highly recommend a birthday pilgrimage!
